New Jersey & Delaware Bay - New Jersey & Delaware Bay Freshwater Fishing Reports
20 More Days – The Countdown to NJ Striped Bass
The countdown to opening day continues this February 9, as we’re just 20 days away from the official winter flounder and back bay striped bass opener in the Garden State. We talked to several tackle shop reps in the region this week for reports at TheFisherman.com and they all the same thing – folks are chomping at the bit in anticipation of that March 1 reopener. Kicking off this week’s video fishing forecast we jump into that topic and spend few minutes talking about the January-February striper closure, before turning our attention to white perch, tautog and porgy action going on this week. We’ve also got our freshwater report with the Pocono Outdoors Guy, plus a New Jersey crew pops up in our Costa Rica update from Quepos. Plus, get a full rundown on weekend events with shows in Manahawkin, Port Monmouth, the Susquehanna River and Palmyra where you'll find Hutch set up this Super Bowl Sunday for The Fisherman Magazine.

Last but not least Verona Park Lake is seeing a good panfish bite and some early day bass on topwater baits.

Fishing in the lower part of the state has been plagued by skim ice and up and down fishing, said Steve over at the Blackwater Sport Center. Pickerel fishing has been steady on live lined minnows when the water has been open on the bogs and ponds, as well as below the dam spillways. Parvin, Rainbow and some of the other lakes are producing some bass, pickerel and crappies. Fishing in Union Lake has been slow so far this winter. Steve said Mike Iasconelli won a recent winter tournament on a South Jersey Lake during January. I guess thats one way to stay in shape when a lot of big tournaments have been cancelled!

Shad fishing was the main topic when I spoke with Diane over at Daves Sporting Goods in Doylestown. Diane said she got the first reports of shad being caught as far north as Bryam the last week in March. Since its the first part of the run most of the shad are bucks being caught on spoons and darts. The water is slightly warmer in the afternoons which are producing better numbers, she said.

Silver Lake is giving up bass and panfish, and Garrisons is seeing an a.m. topwater bite.
