New England - South Shore Massachusetts to Maine Fishing Reports
New England Video Fishing Forecast February 9, 2023
It’s been a bit of a lean week as far as reports go, but the arctic front that blasted New England with ‘once in a decade’ cold, built up some safe ice from the innumerable lakes of Maine through interior Massachusetts and parts of the northwest corner of Connecticut. In keeping with this winter’s trends, we saw a rapid ascension back to temps topping in the mid-40’s with Friday promising to eclipse 50 degrees! Angling opportunities are plentiful across the region from jigging the ice for lakers in Maine, to soaking bait for trout on the Cape, to hunting Sebago salmon in Rhody and drifting jigs in Housatonic for stripers in Connecticut. We don’t see too many mild Februaries, so take advantage!

Mason from Belsans Bait reported that the water temperature dropped about 14 degrees since the storm passed through and the fishing has improved as a result. Pogies are now scarce but mackerel have returned in good numbers and the stripers are all over them. Most of the offshore ledges, Table Top Rock, Egypt Beach and the mouth of North River have all been giving up good catches. Offshore fishing for tuna and sharks has been outstanding.

Yankee Fleet reported Friday fishing aboard the Yankee Fleet was very productive as well as over the weekend. Anglers enjoyed a strong bite both days. There were plenty of haddock and a mix of pollock and red fish as well. There were no dogfish to fight with to everyones delight. Saturday started out with some small haddock and hake which eventually turned into keeper haddock and some cod that turned up with the tide change. Sunday was slightly more productive and that produced smiles all around. Yankee Fleet is providing a COVID safe platform to enjoy a memorable of fishing with your family and friends. Martha from Surfland told me there is an abundance of all kinds of sea life around Plum Island. Beach fishermen have been catching their share of school-sized stripers with a mix of keepers. Boat fishermen have been producing better catches this week. All the bait in the area has also lured porpoises, minke whales and bluefin tuna within viewing distance from shore.

Pete from Saco Bay Tackle reported offshore ground fishing has been steady with fishermen throwing back hundreds of keeper-sized cod but in between keeping some good-sized pollock and haddock. Most of the best bottom fishing has been at Jefferys Ledge. Tuna fishing has been very good with lots of hook ups and sightings particularly on the many of the inside ledges. Striped bass are still on the beaches as well as in the Saco River.
