At Smith Bait Steve said it was another slow week with only a few folks fishing. The reef sites in the bay drew most of the attention with flounder and trout caught there on peeler crab and minnows. Crabbing was very good before the storm.

?White perch to 13 inches in the Leipsic River, and at Garrison Lake and Massey Mills spillways, the Jones River, Lake Sullivan and Moore?s Lake,? informed a fired-up Steve from Smith Bait and Tackle talking about the torrid bite. It?s a frozen shrimp fiesta, but the fish are also grabbing grass shrimp when presented.

Recent rains changed the landscape on the freshwater fishing scene, said Steve over at Smith Bait and Tackle in Leipsic. Steve told us the warm weather delayed the fall feed in most waters and the high waters from the rains put the crappies on the feed in the spillways and the white perch on the feed in the tidal streams. Most of the crappie fishing is in the spillways at Garrisons Lake, Massey Mills Pond and Camden-Wyoming Pond on minnows fished on jigs under floats. The white perch are hitting best on the last of the outgoing water and the first part of the incoming tide on small minnows and jig-Gulp or plasticbait combinations.

At Smith Bait the report was slow fishing with not many anglers on the water. Trout have been caught at Bowers Beach and Port Mahon on peeler crab. White perch fishing has been good in the tidal creeks and rivers with bloodworms and peeler crab the top baits. Crabbing remains very good and many anglers are switching to crabbing while they are available.
